Choosing the right domain name for your business

We all try to get the best, but how do you define best. It does vary from one to another. A start up business who wants to put the first step in to the global arena by having a website might think of getting the best freely available domain name. But on the other hand established companies might want to expand their e-commerce market share by getting the best out of what Internet can offer.

Not thinking of going into much of a explanation, But I will just highlight few important things which should be considered when choosing a domain name for your business.

Let the domain name speak for what you do
Go for the domains which contains the name of the business as part of the domain name. For example if you are selling flowers, flowers.com seems the ideal choice but those are not domains which a start up can afford. So try to add a word before flowers to make it nice.

Make it Short and Sweet
Does a long name fit into billboards, or will you remember it easily, or do your kid ever wonder how to spell it. Try to make it short. Short pronounceable domains are the best.

But If your company name is three words long try to stick the domain to the initials of it. Unless you got around five digits to spend on the domain name getting your most looked after three letter .com won’t be a easy task. They were registered by speculative investors more than a decade back and they are piling up profits on them.
The good news is some of good short pronounceable .com domains are freely available to register. So you are not too late.

Try to get a .com if your business is of commercial nature
.com, .net, .org,  .ws, .info, and many more!! Loads of extensions to choose from!! But if you are running a business it’s always better to go for a .com which is the first domain extension as well. Or you could use your country domain extension. But in that case I just recommend registering the .com as well if it is available and redirect to your website. Don’t think you would be comfortable if a competitor’s site got ads on the .com site, if you are on the .country extension.

A lot of your online success depends on the first action you do to get your website up and running, which is registering the domain name. Its your brand ambassador in the Internet. Its the hardest working sales rep working for you 24×7 though out the year, including Christmas!!

Is their any use of buying a cheap piece of land in a rural village to setup a mega store, or what is the business strategy behind spending lump of money to buy a land to setup a betel shop in the posh suburbs of London.

There are loads of other factors to consider when choosing the right domain name for your business. You can try out few domain name suggestion tools to come up with creative names, but its always better to get a second opinion.

Getting a .com domain is key. I can’t stress how important it is. I also like names that are easily memorable and only a couple of syllables long, but they can generally be hard to get these days.

Good post, I enjoyed reading it and subscribed to your site.
